Unexpected Patch 2.1.0

The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered Chronological

Update []: Patch 2.1.0 for The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered is currently available for download on PS5 and PC (though it bears the version number 1.5 on the latter).

As indicated in the original report below, the update introduces a new ‘Chronological’ mode to the game, alongside several performance enhancements and bug remedies.

You can review the complete PS5 patch notes via this link to Naughty Dog’s official site, while the PC patch notes are available here.

Original Report: Well, this is unexpected. Naughty Dog has revealed a fresh update for The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, which allows players to experience the entire game in chronological sequence.

The aptly named Chronological Experience rearranges Ellie and Abby’s journey so that events unfold along a straightforward timeline. If you’ve previously completed the game, you’ll recognize that the narrative oscillates between various times — a stylistic choice that some have criticized for being hard to follow at times.

“We always pondered how it would feel to experience this narrative in chronological order. And now at last, we can respond to that inquiry,” writes Naughty Dog’s editorial content manager Jonathan Dornbush on the PlayStation Blog.

He goes on:

“With the new Chronological mode, we believe players will acquire even greater understanding of Part II’s storyline. Players will observe how Ellie receiving a guitar seamlessly leads to her learning to play, for instance, while the odyssey through Seattle will reveal the intriguing parallels between Ellie and Abby’s intertwined journeys. You’ll notice just how close they come to encountering one another, how their actions influence each other, and more.”

This update was seemingly made feasible through a partnership between the developer and Nixxes — the firm responsible for most of Sony’s first-party PC adaptations.

The Chronological Experience is available today (July 8th) for both PS5 and PC. We will refresh this article when it becomes accessible for download.

Additionally, the patch introduces two new character skins to the game; you will be able to outfit Joel and Tommy as Uncharted’s Nathan and Sam Drake, respectively, in the No Return mode.

For the record, the blog announcement also states that “a variety of further bug fixes and performance improvements” will be incorporated in this same patch.
