Stunning Ecco the Dolphin Remasters Announced for PS5, Fresh Game in Development 1

In an unexpected revelation, Ecco the Dolphin designer Ed Annunziata has openly disclosed that remasters of the classic SEGA Genesis titles are in the works. Trademarks for the series were noticed earlier this year.

In even more thrilling news, a brand-new game is also being developed, with the franchise’s official website currently counting down to 25th April, 2026.

This announcement was embedded in an interview published on Xbox Wire, fitting into SEGA’s ongoing strategy to revive its classic intellectual properties. Sequels to beloved titles such as Jet Set Radio and Crazy Taxi are also on their way.

“Myself and the entire original team will be remastering the first Ecco the Dolphin and [The] Tides of Time titles,” Annunziata casually stated.

“After that, we will create an entirely new third game with modern gameplay and GPU sensibilities. Stay tuned to eccothedolphin.com.”

While Annunziata did not mention particular platforms, given the context of this interview, an Xbox Series X|S version appears unavoidable. Moreover, if a project is aimed at Xbox, it’s almost certain to be available on the more popular PS5 as well.

Ecco the Dolphin first debuted on the SEGA Genesis in 1992, offering a truly distinctive action-adventure gameplay involving time travel and addressing environmental concerns. The sequel, The Tides of Time, refined the original’s challenge and continued the narrative.

Subsequent iterations were released, including the family-friendly Ecco Jr. Additionally, Sony played a role in publishing the PS2 version of the Dreamcast title Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future, which stands as the latest entry in the franchise to date.

We have always appreciated the essence of Ecco the Dolphin, but the gameplay has not aged gracefully, particularly through a contemporary lens. We hope that these remasters, along with the upcoming game, can mitigate these issues and revitalize these true classics.
