PSSR strikes again

Much to the frustration of PS5 Pro owners, performance hiccups in third-party games have become concerningly common — and Silent Hill F is the latest high profile release to stumble.

As outlined in a new technical analysis from Digital Foundry, the survival horror title offers just one graphical mode on the Pro — named ‘Enhanced’ — and it comes with a very specific issue.

A blend of the game’s ‘Performance’ and ‘Quality’ modes found on base PS5, ‘Enhanced’ hits a mostly smooth 60 frames-per-second and a reasonable resolution that’s apparently difficult to nail down, but it’s pretty much on par with what the ‘Quality’ mode offers.

However, on Pro, the title seemingly forces the use of PSSR — the console’s AI-based upscaling technique, and the results leave much to be desired.

Basically, PSSR causes a near constant shimmering to appear over grass as the upscaler attempts to recognise and recreate the detail.

This is a problem that multiple other third-party games run into on Pro, including Dragon’s Dogma 2 and Assassin’s Creed Shadows — but both of those examples allow you to toggle PSSR alongside several other Pro-specific options.

The lack of any such options in Silent Hill F means that PS5 Pro players are going to be stuck with this unsightly shimmering — and some odd lighting issues on middle-distance objects — until Konami delivers a fix.

What’s more, we happened to notice some frustrating micro-stutters during our time with the game. As noted in our Silent Hill F PS5 review: “Particularly during heavy combat sequences, the title constantly pauses for tenths of a second to the point of annoyance. It’s a flaw that’ll need fixing in post-launch updates.”

Again, Konami’s got some work to do here.

What do you make of this technical blemish? Do you feel as though the PS5 Pro is being underutilised at this point? Stare at some grass in the comments section below.

A little too much, some might say.
