Rumours of a Red Dead Redemption 2 PS5 Version Swirl Again

Red Dead Redemption 2 PS4

One of the most perplexing aspects of the PS5 era thus far is how Red Dead Redemption 2 has yet to receive a current-gen update. While it runs smoothly on PS5 through backwards compatibility, you’re restricted to 30 frames per second and a subpar resolution compared to what’s offered on Xbox Series X|S.

Speculations over the last few years have hinted that Rockstar has indeed been working on a Red Dead Redemption 2 PS5 version, but those intentions were sidelined to prioritize the development of GTA 6. In 2022, Rockstar insider Tez2 indicated that the developer had abandoned plans to revitalize both the original game and its sequel for modern consoles.

Certainly, Red Dead Redemption did receive a new edition in 2023, but this was merely for PS4, and it functioned more as a straightforward port rather than a true remaster or even a PS5 update. The resolution saw an improvement, while the frame rate stayed at 30 until a post-launch patch elevated it to 60fps on PS5.

Currently, a new report suggests that Rockstar is working on a Nintendo Switch 2 edition of Red Dead Redemption 2, along with a patch for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, aimed at enhancing the open-world experience on contemporary hardware. This information comes from “sources familiar with Rockstar,” as stated to publications like Game Reactor and Nintenduo.

They indicate that the Switch 2 version aims to launch this year, although details surrounding the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S updates remain unclear. This claim arises just days after it was also rumored that Rockstar intends to port GTA 4 to newer consoles. If all these assertions turn out to be correct, it implies the developer has resumed work on the PS5 edition despite the recent delay of GTA 6 to May 2026.

One possibility is that Video Games Deluxe is involved in the project; they were recently acquired by Rockstar and rebranded as Rockstar Australia. They were brought in to address issues with the PS5, PS4 GTA Trilogy, which was released in a problematic state.
