PS5 Pro Update PSSR

Based on a recent rumour, Sony is allegedly preparing a significant PS5 Pro update that could substantially elevate gaming performance.

At the center of these alleged improvements stands the AI-based upscaling software PSSR, traditionally a cornerstone feature of the PS5 Pro. As stated by the well-informed YouTube technology channel Moore’s Law Is Dead (and transcribed by TechRadar), a substantial PSSR revamp is reportedly under development at PlayStation.

This overhaul is reportedly so drastic it’s been dubbed “PSSR 2.” The basic premise is that developers are given the ability to decrease their game resolutions to enhance overall performance, while an upgraded version of PSSR compensates for the image quality.

The rumor also states that Sony is now aiming for 4K resolution at 120 frames per second and even 8K resolution at 60 frames per second via PSSR. If this proves accurate, it’s a considerable leap from the current capabilities of the PS5 Pro.

PSSR has already demonstrated its ability in numerous PS5 games. For instance, Assassin’s Creed Shadows employs this tech to add noticeable detail to its visuals while maintaining a smooth 60 frames per second.

However, for PSSR to be effective, developers must properly utilize it. As such, a significant PS5 Pro update does not necessarily mean all games will instantly perform better.

Nonetheless, it’s clear the console serves, to some extent, as a testing ground for technology like PSSR. It’s safe to assume that Sony is diligently experimenting with its software in anticipation of the forthcoming PS6.
