No, not Roman Cancelled

A new Guilty Gear game has reportedly been cancelled at Arc System Works.
This is according to an exclusive article from Insider Gaming, which unfortunately doesn’t give us a whole lot to go on. It suggests that the project wasn’t finished, but it’s unclear how long the Japanese developer had been working on it.
Guilty Gear Strive launched in 2021, and went on to become a major hit for the company, to the extent that it’s still being supported. In fact, producer Ken Miyauchi just recently stated that the studio has “big and exciting” plans for the title’s future.
Of course, Arc System Works is also going all-in on Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls right now; the team-based brawler has been in development for at least the last couple of years.
It’s possible that the developer felt the need to readjust its outlook, having secured the Marvel Tokon project alongside PlayStation. For all we know, the new Guilty Gear may have only been in a conceptual state before it was cut off.
From where we’re sitting, we wouldn’t be overly concerned about this cancellation. Guilty Gear is quite clearly in a very healthy state, still racking up sales and players over four years after its initial release — and again, Arc System Works is apparently more than happy to keep supporting it.
Still, you would think that a new Guilty Gear is inevitable — but we’d be surprised to see it be announced, or even enter full production, before Marvel Tokon drops.

Robert (or Rob if you’re lazy) is an assistant editor of Push Square, and has been a fan of PlayStation since the 90s, when Tekken 2 introduced him to the incredible world of video games. He still takes his fighting games seriously, but RPGs are his true passion. The Witcher, Persona, Dragon Quest, Mass Effect, Final Fantasy, Trails, Tales — he’s played ’em all. A little too much, some might say.
