Frame rate reductions and minimal enhancements
- by Sammy Barker

Tech analysts Digital Foundry have published their preliminary observations regarding DOOM: The Dark Ages, and the results are rather disheartening for PS5 gamers – particularly those utilizing the pricier PS5 Pro.
Both of Sony’s devices experience frame rate fluctuations, dropping below the intended 60fps during intense action sequences. To add insult to injury, the Xbox Series X appears to maintain a more stable performance, which suggests that less effort has been allocated to the PlayStation versions.
Although the PS5 Pro can achieve higher resolutions, reaching pixel counts as high as 1800p, it shows minimal other enhancements compared to its standard console variant. There’s not even a utilization of PSSR for image upscaling.
Digital Foundry characterizes this as “one of the least thrilling PS5 Pro upgrades we’ve encountered in the recent AAA lineup”, and it’s difficult to contest their assertions. It seems that developer id Software has devoted the majority of its resources toward the Xbox Series X version, leaving the other console formats to yield competent yet uninspiring outcomes.
Let’s hope forthcoming patches enhance the experience on PlayStation and better utilize the PS5 Pro’s superior capabilities.
