Sony’s exclusive PSSR has been substituted

Obsidian's Already Attempting to Enhance The Outer Worlds 2's Unsatisfactory Presentation on PS5 Pro 1

PS5 Pro is expected to be the premier platform for console gaming, and it frequently is – provided developers support it properly.

Regrettably, The Outer Worlds 2 launched in an unsatisfactory condition on Sony’s high-performance platform, exhibiting an unstable frame rate and a terrible execution of the Japanese titan’s proprietary upscaling technology, PSSR.

Obsidian has implemented temporary solutions to tackle this, replacing PSSR with TSR in a patch to “resolve hazy grass on Paradise Island and unforeseen lighting issues throughout the game”.

For those unfamiliar with Digital Foundry, TSR functions by utilizing previous frames to reconstruct a higher resolution image. Conversely, PSSR employs machine learning to attain a similar result.

In optimal scenarios, PSSR is expected to deliver superior outcomes, but TSR presents a more familiar toolkit that developers may find more approachable.

Considering the PSSR method utilized in The Outer Worlds 2 had distinct troubles with rendering “busy” scenes, we believe TSR should manage these situations more efficiently.

The patch also introduces various bug and progression resolutions, but there’s no news regarding performance enhancements for the PS5 family, where performance can be a bit inconsistent.

However, we have included the comprehensive list of patch notes below. We have omitted two spoilers from the list of resolutions, but you can locate that on Obsidian’s website if you’re interested.

The Outer Worlds 2 v1.0.4.1 Patch Notes

Major Fixes

  • Resolved issue with saving crashing on load 100% of the time if corrupt data infiltrates the favorite item data.
  • Addressed several rare crashes.
  • (PS5 only) Corrected crash that occurred when the game was initiated with only the PlayGo chunk installed, and the user advanced past Horizon point station.
  • Plug Puller Perk no longer obstructs encounters from progressing.
  • Players will no longer experience their conversation history resetting unexpectedly during gameplay.
  • Cleared portions of the map will no longer revert.

Quests/Progression: (Contains Spoilers)

  • Players who faced issues with Inez after their encounter at the Ministry of Accuracy should now be able to advance her dialogue with Milverstreet, even if they couldn’t before.
  • Inez will now consistently deliver her introductory dialogue lines upon initial meeting in the Ministry of Accuracy, instead of occasionally reverting to her standard companion conversation.
  • OA Troopers will no longer appear in the ACHQ at an unintended moment. Loading a save from before combat with these units will enable players to progress the quest as intended.
    • Note: Players must load a save prior to the bug occurring. We are exploring solutions for a retroactive fix.
  • Otto’s Lock in Free Market Station is now functioning as intended and can be resolved.

Audio/Visual

  • PS5 Pro now utilizes TSR for upscaling, aiming to rectify blurry grass on Paradise Island and unexpected lighting interference throughout the game.
  • Double jump boots will no longer emit audio at double volume.
  • (Xbox only) Fixed a problem that may cause blue noise along the edges of grass and computer displays.
