Exercise prudence

If you’ve been excitedly awaiting the physical edition of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, scheduled for release on 13th October, we suggest you proceed with caution.
Highlighted by well-known social media influencer Wario64, the cover art for the PS5 edition has been revised to include an ‘Internet Required’ notice. In the same vein, the Xbox variant indicates that the RPG will “necessitate [a] content download”.
The game does include several DLC items that must be redeemed via a voucher, including some armor pieces, two weapons, and a few mounts. It remains unclear if this disclaimer pertains to them. (You’ll clearly need to connect online to claim them, after all.)
However, both Microsoft and Bethesda maintain an dismal recent history concerning physical releases, disappointing gamers with inferior products that offer only a fraction of the game’s content on the Blu-ray disc.
Numerous enthusiasts prefer acquiring physical copies to guarantee their software remains playable well beyond the closure of Sony’s servers, so the concept of Game Key Discs (as we’re dubbing them) has not been received favorably.
Nonetheless, this game is 120GB, which makes it likely that the publisher couldn’t fit all its content onto a 100GB PS5 disc. In that scenario, we’d advocate for the use of two Blu-rays – this is supposedly a Deluxe Edition, after all.
Of course, we might be anticipating too much here.
While the notice raises concerns – and we advise caution before you pre-order this variant of the game – it’s still conceivable that the game will be included on the disc and the publisher is not engaging in anything underhanded.
We’ll reach out to Bethesda to inquire if this physical release will be playable offline. We’ll update you as soon as we have more information.
