On the rise

You can’t refer to Guerrilla’s remarkable open world RPG series Horizon without a plethora of oddballs emerging from the shadows.
“It’s an industry setup,” they simplistically narrate. “It’s being exploited,” they mention.
Well, with merely two primary installments so far, it appears the franchise is undeniably incredibly popular: a Korean news piece linked to the recent announcement of NCSOFT’s MMO version Horizon Steel Frontiers indicates that the series has now moved over 40 million units overall.
Earlier this year, as part of its lawsuit against Tencent knockoff Light of Motiram, the company verified that series sales were in “excess” of 38 million, so it seems they’ve crossed that mentioned threshold in the past few months.
This figure will comprise all Horizon-related content, naturally, including the two core titles and their various remasters, as well as PSVR2 offshoot Horizon Call of the Mountain and the more casual-friendly LEGO Horizon Adventures.
However, this comfortably positions the franchise among the elite of best-selling PlayStation first-party properties.
For instance, Gran Turismo recently achieved 100 million units lifetime, and that’s a franchise that’s been active since the PS1 period. This highlights just how significant Horizon has become considering the series is not even ten years old.
Sony clearly has many more initiatives lined up for the franchise, too: there’s a live-action film in development, alongside a second multiplayer title from developer Guerrilla.
Anticipate the series’ success to continue its upward trajectory.
