Sony is gearing up to launch its next big PS Store offer. Simply named Summer Sale, this is likely to be another monstrous promotion on PS5 and PS4’s digital storefront when it gets started next week.

In fact, PS Plus members can already take advantage of some of the discounts that’ll be offered up. Those subscribed to Sony’s service can grab a bargain in the Summer Sale right now ahead of the official launch in a few days’ time.

This sneak peek of the full Summer Sale already includes some big games, so we’re going to pick through what’s available and make some recommendations.

A Plague Tale: Innocence (PS5)

$11.99/£10.49 (-70%)

A Plague Tale: Innocence is the best kind of surprise: an unexpectedly strong historical outing with a likeable cast of characters and unique stealth mechanics. The fantasy underpinnings may not be to everyone’s tastes – especially as the tale somewhat limps to its conclusion – but Asobo Studio’s outstanding use of the PS5 hardware, including the DualSense, make it a must play for fans of story-based adventures.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows (PS5)

$52.49/£52.49 (-25%)

Ubisoft finally takes the fight to Japan in Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Boasting dual protagonists and one of the most detailed, intricate open worlds in the entire series, Shadows is another emotionally charged tale of vengeance. The game pushes stealth-based gameplay much harder than its RPG peers, but doesn’t shy away from crunchy, counter-heavy combat in the process, offering up the best of both worlds when it comes to stab-happy action. An undeniably strong entry in the long-running franchise, capped off with endearing characters and a surprisingly nuanced story.

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden (PS5)

$29.99/£24.99 (-50%)

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden marries an excellent narrative with engaging and enjoyable gameplay. Poor enemy variety and technical flaws hold it back from true greatness, but its excellent, story-focused side quests on the other side make a few drab combat encounters worth pushing through. The studio’s best game to date, Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is a new IP we hope is here to stay.

Borderlands 3 (PS5)

$5.99/£5.99 (-90%)

Gearbox’s popular looter shooter is back in typical style with Borderlands 3, and it looks and plays better than ever on PS5. While it doesn’t innovate on older entries all that much, the third game in the franchise is probably the best. Improved gameplay makes the act of firing weapons a joy, there’s a tonne of variety in quests and guns, and that signature love-or-hate humour is very much in place. It shines brightest on Sony’s current-gen machine, too, thanks to boosted visuals and up to 120 frames-per-second on the right display. There are few better co-op shooters out there — this is an absolute blast with friends, whether playing locally or online.

Dead Space (PS5)

$13.99/£13.99 (-80%)

One of EA’s best-loved games returns with this PS5 remake of Dead Space. Retelling the original story of Isaac Clarke exploring the decimated corridors of the USG Ishimura, this updated version is more than just a fresh coat of paint. On top of modern visuals, the remake turns the ship into one interconnected environment, expands many areas, adds voice acting for Isaac, and more. Aside from all that, this is the same great Dead Space you remember — intense atmosphere, unique enemies and weapons, and a memorable story.

Deathloop (PS5)

$11.99/£11.99 (-80%)

Arkane Studios is known for its immersive sims like Dishonored, and with Deathloop, the developer takes that formula in a bold new direction. Playing as an assassin caught in a time loop on an island filled with disdainful characters, it’s your job to eliminate all of them within one cycle, else you’ll need to start again. The joy of the game is in slowly figuring out the right sequence of events that need to take place in order for you to crack the code and break the loop. A higher emphasis on action combined with some super fun powers makes this feel like a supercharged Dishonored. The loop mechanic and threat of player invasions provides some tension, and it’s all delivered with a fantastic 60s aesthetic.

Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero (PS5)

$48.99/£48.99 (-30%)

Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero brings back the fan favourite Budokai Tenkaichi series in all but name, and the result is great. Featuring hundreds of playable characters from the series’ long history, you’re able to reenact all your favourite battles in frenetic, technical, and over-the-top brawls. It also features a vague retelling of the saga, where you’re able to view the story from new perspectives, plus you can craft your own scenarios to live out even the unlikeliest of rivalries. It’s a feature-packed arena fighter that looks fantastic and delivers a super satisfying power fantasy.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake (PS5)

$38.99/£38.99 (-35%)

That eternal Dragon Quest charm is especially potent in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake — a thoughtful repackaging of a classic RPG. With its quality of life additions and delightful 3D visuals, it’s easy to argue that this is the adventure’s definitive form — even if some of its structural weaknesses remain in place.

Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age (PS4)

$19.99/£17.49 (-50%)

The definitive version of an already outstanding Japanese RPG, Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age is a gigantic and endlessly charming adventure. It retains the series’ classic JRPG roots — turn based combat included — but a heavier emphasis on storytelling through a fantastic cast of characters elevates the experience significantly. One of the greatest Dragon Quest games yet — and that’s saying a lot.
