Rockstar announces postponement and updated release date
- by Liam Croft

Rockstar Games has announced that Grand Theft Auto 6 will be launched for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on 26th May 2026, indicating an official delay for the game. This postponement was confirmed through a statement released on the developer’s official site.
The message states:
Hello everyone,
Grand Theft Auto VI is now scheduled to be released on May 26, 2026.
We sincerely apologize for the later-than-expected timeline. The enthusiasm and anticipation surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto have been genuinely heartwarming for our entire team. We greatly appreciate your support and patience as we finalize the game.
With every title we have released, our ambition has always been to surpass your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no different. We hope you recognize our need for this additional time to achieve the quality you anticipate and merit.
We are eager to share further details with you shortly.
Best regards,
Rockstar Games
Arguably one of the most awaited video games of all time, GTA 6 was initially unveiled back in December 2023, and only one teaser trailer has been released since then. Rockstar Games has at least hinted that it will be disclosing more information “soon” and appreciates the excitement surrounding the title as “humbling”.
The ripple effect here is that other developers are now aware that GTA 6 won’t be available this year or during the early part of 2026, leading them to feel more secure in finalizing their release dates for 2025. With Summer Game Fest approaching next month, we might witness a surge of announcement dates.
What are your opinions regarding the delay? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below.
Liam has grown up with a PlayStation controller in hand and a fondness for Metal Gear Solid. Nowadays, he enjoys playing the latest PS5 hits as well as cheering for Derby County. That last detail, however, can be a bit of a downer.
