Activision acknowledges deployment of AI instruments

If the completely absurd co-op narrative wasn’t disappointing enough, another unfavorable aspect overshadowing the conversation surrounding the launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is its apparent incorporation of AI-generated visuals in-game.
Within the multiplayer personalization interface, some of the Calling Cards available for your profile strikingly resemble AI filters, such as the Studio Ghibli-themed one that dominated Twitter for a day. Additional illustrations appear to feature six fingers on a single hand, along with indications that the highly prized Prestige emblems might have been altered using AI technologies.

This isn’t the initial occasion the Call of Duty franchise has faced accusations — and confirmations — of deploying AI in its artwork, as a zombie Santa Claus from Black Ops 6 exhibited its six-fingered hand in a screenshot the previous year.
On the Steam page for Black Ops 7, there’s a statement disclosing “Our team employs generative AI tools to assist in developing certain in-game assets”. In reaction to the negative feedback following the launch, Activision issued an additional comment, stating:
Like many across the globe, we utilize diverse digital instruments, including AI tools, to enhance and support our teams in crafting the finest gaming experiences possible for our players. Our creative process remains driven by the skilled individuals within our studios.
This follows the dialogue surrounding ARC Raiders, which has received criticism for utilizing AI instead of voice actors for certain dialogues.
