NFS: Rivals the latest victim

A somewhat obscured Online Service Shutdown page on the EA website has disclosed that the servers for the PS4 launch title Need for Speed: Rivals will be disabled this October.
The online servers will be switched off on 7th October 2025, implying that any online features will no longer be available in the game afterwards. Unlike ANTHEM, which EA is also discontinuing, Need for Speed: Rivals at least offers an offline, single-player mode where you can compete against AI opponents.
A PS3 edition was also launched, but it’s not mentioned on the Online Service Shutdown page as of this writing.
The game merged the elements of Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit and Need for Speed: Most Wanted by requiring players to choose between being a racer or a cop in an expansive world. We found the game enjoyable upon release, awarding it a score of 7/10 and concluding: “The ingenious competitive dynamic at the heart of the open-world adventure enhances the experience with a thrilling intensity that guarantees outrunning your rivals, whether online or offline, remains enjoyable at all times.”
However, after 7th October, your open world will be unavoidably populated by AI racers and law enforcement officers instead of actual players.

Liam has been immersed in gaming with a PlayStation controller since childhood and has a passion for Metal Gear Solid. These days, he’s busy playing the latest and greatest PS5 titles while also cheering for Derby County. That last aspect is his shortcoming.
