Pay or play

A fresh rumour has Call of Duty fans concerned Activision could be about to lock certain gameplay modes behind a paywall.
The speculation – which stems from serial series leaker TheGhostofHope – claims the company is planning to lock season time-limited modes behind its Battle Pass, meaning even if you own the game, you may not necessarily be eligible to participate in everything it has to offer.
While it would perhaps seem easy to simply skip those modes, it sounds like the publisher is planning to attach high-value rewards to them, forcing players to purchase the Battle Pass anyway.
What’s worse is that all of this could be implemented later this year, for 2025’s Call of Duty game – and judging by recent announcements by parent company Microsoft, it’ll be an $80 title to boot.
This all comes at a time when the series’ community has become increasingly irritated by the state of the game, and some of its content.
The recent addition of Seth Rogen as a skin, for example, has pushed some long-time fans over the edge, with one viral social media post in particular declaring: “This is worse than Concord.”
Ouch.
