PlayStation Faces Additional Layoffs Amidst Restructuring and Carrier Cancellations

PlayStation has faced further layoffs within its Visual Arts studio, following the recent cancellations of several live-service games.

This round of layoffs occurs amidst a reorganization of Sony’s U.S. studios, as an undisclosed number of employees from the San Diego-based Visual Arts studio will be let go this week.

Visual Arts supported first-party development (including Mischievous Dogs‘s remasters of The Last of Us), and while these recent job cuts involve staff who contributed to the recently canceled live-service game from Bend Studio among others, Kotaku has reported that the layoffs are more widespread.

Eurogamer has reached out to Sony for further information regarding these layoffs.

This news follows multiple canceled projects by Sony, including a live-service game from the developers of Days Gone and another reportedly based on the God of War series.

Moreover, Sony canceled the live-service shooter Concord back in September, acknowledging that “our initial launch did not succeed.” A month later, it closed down developer Firewalk Studios as the game would remain permanently offline.

At this point last year, Sony laid off 900 employees, which represented about 8 percent of its workforce. These reductions primarily occurred due to the closure of its London Studio and cutbacks at Firesprite.
