Phil Spencer’s Vision for Gaming: Embracing a Multiplatform Future
Microsoft also intends to improve Switch 2 by introducing ports of Xbox titles
Phil Spencer from Microsoft disclosed additional details regarding Xbox’s evolving brand identity, aiming to make its first-party titles accessible across multiple platforms.
In a conversation with independent gaming journalist Destin Legarie (via Eurogamer), Spencer mentioned that Xbox is moving away from the notion of first-party titles like Starfield and Indiana Jones having an “exclusivity window”.
“There’s no reason for me to restrict any game and declare that it will not reach a place where it can find players or achieve commercial success for us,” Spencer stated. “Our approach is to make our games accessible.”
“Game Pass plays a vital role in experiencing games on our platform, but excluding games from other platforms? That’s not our direction; that doesn’t suit us.”
He explained that Microsoft wants Xbox to be the platform that allows “the world’s largest games” to be available in “various locations.”
“We believe that’s what distinguishes us,” he remarked. “Most other platforms are confined to a single device, whether it’s on PC, mobile, or console. We aim for Xbox to be a platform that empowers creators across any display that players prefer.”
When asked if this would cause Xbox’s brand identity to evolve, Spencer indicated that it is perpetually changing and adapting to the market.
“This is all about ensuring that your library of games owned on Xbox is playable in multiple environments, so I would describe it as an evolution of our identity. But I believe this is an identity the industry requires,” he added.
“When you consider where this market stands currently and observe the challenges, the market challenges that exist for various companies, I think making games more accessible is crucial.
