Obsidian Entertainment Shifts Gears: Emphasizes Long-Term Vision Over Aggressive Development

It aims to endure for 100(!) years

Obsidian Entertainment is currently making headlines for its exceptional work on Avowed, but the studio’s ambitions extend beyond that. The Xbox studio plans to remain active for 100 years or beyond, by adhering to its core principles and staying true to itself.

In a recent discussion at DICE 2025 (thanks to PC Gamer), Obsidian’s Vice President of Operations, Marcus Morgan, elaborated on this vision, emphasizing why he is “serious” about the company enduring for a full century. The essence of his message is that Obsidian intends to produce games “not rushed, but regularly”, and that the studio never rushes to create “super profitable” offerings.

Morgan also reflected on past achievements and how the team has continuously thrived throughout its 22-year history. Obsidian aims to maintain a team that is “lean and dedicated”, and moving forward, it strives to have “the lowest turnover rate in the industry” – retaining its talent to create exceptional video games.

In a landscape where constant growth is often touted as the only way forward, this perspective is remarkably refreshing to hear. The Xbox studio holds that “modest success” is sufficient, and that “not trying to grow aggressively, expand our team size, or produce super profitable games” will sustain it for decades to come.
