Nintendo has indeed filed a patent that substantiates previous evaluations indicating that its next-generation console will utilize AI upscaling.

The patent refers to Nvidia’s DLSS upscaling (Deep Learning Super Sampling), enabling the device to elevate gaming performance at higher resolutions employing AI technology.

Notably highlighted by Laura Kate Dale, the patent provides an example where the system could be used “specifically to minimize overall game sizes” to accommodate a newer title onto “smaller capacity physical media,” such as Switch cartridges.

“The example presented suggests that a game featuring native 4K textures might require a 60GB download, whereas a 1080p native version could only demand 20GB (which would allow it to fit on a 32GB Switch cartridge, the largest size currently produced by Nintendo for Switch 1),” Dale adds. “The concept is to perform a 4X upscale on the device in real time.”
