Nintendo: “All options are still viable”
Recently, Nintendo revealed that The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker could potentially be featured on the Switch 2 as part of the GameCube collection upon its release.
If you’re concerned that this may hinder the prospects of the Wii U HD edition of the game becoming available soon, there appears to be some hope. Tim Gettys from Kinda Silly Video Games spoke with Nate Bihldorff, Nintendo of America’s senior vice president of product development, who suggested that “all options are [still] on the table”.
Here’s his response (via VGC):
I also had the chance to engage with Nate…and asked various questions, and true to Nintendo’s style, we didn’t receive many straightforward responses.
Nonetheless, I asked whether the inclusion of The Wind Waker on Nintendo Switch Online would inhibit its release as a standalone Wii U version on the Switch 2, and he promptly replied ‘no, all options remain open’.
Clearly, nothing is assured one way or another, but many examples exist of games available on Nintendo Switch Online that you can access in various forms, whether it’s a remake, a direct port, or something else entirely…but ultimately, it’s a matter of ‘never say never’.
Zelda: Wind Waker will join Soul Calibur II and F-Zero GX when the GameCube collection debuts on the Switch 2’s Expansion Pack tier. Nintendo has also confirmed the launch of a wireless version of the GameCube controller.
