Bid farewell to crimson spines

This week, we’ve been inundated with information regarding the upcoming Switch 2, and fans are eagerly uncovering all kinds of the most innovative and thrilling features.

If you haven’t observed it yet, the packaging for Switch 2 titles is actually quite distinct (and seemingly a bit larger). Instead of transparent plastic borders, they’ve opted for a striking red. What might stand out even more is how the cover art wraps around the case, extending over the spine. In other words, you won’t be facing red spines with mostly mundane text on them anymore.

It’s important to highlight that the images shared in this social post specifically display the Switch 2’s Japanese box art layout, which is currently showcased at the Nintendo Museum in Kyoto.

If you look closely, you’ll notice that the game title (at least on Mario Kart World) is positioned on the upper section of the spine. Again, this may not entirely match the design and markings seen on the domestic box art (although they appear quite similar at this stage, based on a 3D rendering from the Switch 2 parental controls video).

This provides a glimpse at two first-party titles, and we’ll be eager to see how this new design will be applied to third-party games and whether it maintains consistency.

What do you think about this transformation in Nintendo’s physical game packaging? Share your thoughts in the comments.
