Update[Wed 15th Jan 2025, 4:10pm]:

The creators of the Nintendo Community alternative Pretendo have shared a response via social media, addressing Nintendo’s alert regarding the use of unofficial products and services.

While acknowledging the publisher’s strong position on safety, the individuals behind the fan-driven service reiterated their dedication to user protection, emphasizing that they’ve even issued “security updates for titles Nintendo no longer maintains”.

Original Report: Although many may think Nintendo’s focus is primarily on the Switch “successor” at this moment, it seems the company’s consumer support division has taken time to evaluate concerns regarding unauthorized products and services for older consoles.

In a brief post on social media, the Japanese division has reportedly confirmed the existence of services that substitute features such as “online gameplay” for the Wii U. They are now advising anyone utilizing these services to refrain, as they could potentially create security risks. Here is the full translation:

Nintendo: “[Notice] We have confirmed the existence of unauthorized services that substitute features such as online play for the Wii U, which ceased operation on April 9, 2024. We urge you to not use such services as they may pose unforeseen security risks.”

As previously mentioned, online services for the Wii U (and 3DS) officially concluded in April of last year. At that time, community-driven network services like ‘Pretendo’ emerged to restore online access for fans. Pretendo had even reached a point where Wii U users could access these services without needing to modify their consoles.

In other words, if you encounter any issues with your Wii U after utilizing an unauthorized service, do not expect Nintendo to assist you. You can learn more about all of this as well as the Wii U and 3DS online shutdown in our prior coverage here on Nintendo Life.
