The highlight of the Xbox Developer Showcase this week was the unveiling of Ninja Gaiden 4. According to Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer, this has been a considerable time in the works.

During the same discussion with Gamertag Radio, he revealed that Xbox had been actively exploring this project “around six or seven years ago”:

“That was a project we kind of reached out and said ‘hey, what if’ like six or seven years ago.”

Koei Tecmo’s Group Ninja also mentioned in the Showcase this week that “it’s been several years” since they “quietly, like ninjas – collaborated with PlatinumGames”, making it a “joyful” occasion to finally announce the news to everyone.

This particular series has a special connection to Xbox – with the initial entry in the trilogy launching as an Xbox ‘exclusive’. However, it has now been “over 10 years” since the last major Ninja Gaiden release (Ninja Gaiden 3).

Phil further shared in his latest interview that Xbox’s relationship with Koei Tecmo (and Japanese developers overall) is thriving at the moment:

“I’m very optimistic about our partnerships with the publishers in Japan, it has required a lot of travel, a lot of FaceTime, a lot of attentive listening…ensuring I’m receiving their input; I think about Metaphor last year and our collaboration on that game…the initiatives we’ve undertaken with Sega…being on stage with Square…but yesterday with Team Ninja…just to be able to unveil it yesterday and witness the response is incredible.”

In addition to Ninja Gaiden 4, which is scheduled for release in Fall 2025, Xbox also unexpectedly released Ninja Gaiden 2 Black on Series X|S, Game Pass, and other platforms just the day before.

Are you looking forward to Ninja Gaiden?
