Following last week’s announcement regarding a June release date for Nightdive Studios’ highly anticipated Machine Shock 2 remaster, the developer has been discussing the future of the beloved franchise – hinting that a complete Machine Shock 2 remake could potentially be in the works.

A Machine Shock 2 remaster was initially revealed back in 2019, midway through Nightdive’s development of the Machine Shock 1 remake. Although the remake’s path to release was tumultuous, the final product received widespread acclaim – to the extent that there is now excitement for a fully realized Machine Shock 2 remake as well. This is something Nightdive is certainly aware of.

“I’ve been asked twice today why we didn’t opt for a remake,” Nightdive’s director of business development, Larry Kuperman stated in a recent interview with VGC. “And I replied, ‘Are you under the impression that just because we did a remaster, we won’t be able to create a remake in the future?'” Kuperman’s remarks could easily be dismissed as mere speculation, had he not continued with, “That is something I can neither confirm nor deny. For instance, Machine Shock 3 is currently in a state of limbo, with the rights now belonging to Tencent following a complicated series of events that caused the project to derail.

In discussions with VGC, Kuperman acknowledged that the “situation surrounding System Shock 3 is quite intricate”, but expressed that there could be updates regarding the project “potentially within a year… or it may take longer.” Regardless of how the fate of Machine Shock 3 unfolds, Kuperman confirmed that Nightdive still has “visions of what we can achieve within our control.”

“We’ll see how things progress,” he added. “There are plenty of things we can do within the first and second [games].” This certainly brings us back around to the potential for a Machine Shock 2 remake or some undefined new “content” for at least the first two titles.

Before any of that, however, there’s Nightdive’s Machine Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster. This long-awaited edition of BioShock developer Irrational Games’ critically acclaimed original
