Employees were reportedly caught off guard by the announcement

Night School Studio has recently enacted a reduction affecting an undisclosed number of employees.

The studio – best recognized for Oxenfree – was purchased by Netflix in 2021. Employees were taken aback when the job cuts were revealed during a company meeting last month.

Netflix has chosen not to provide public comments regarding the layoffs, however, Game Developer notes that the reduction in staff is unlikely to affect any of the games currently in development.

The layoffs follow the recent news that Netflix canceled six game projects as part of efforts to “realign [its] portfolio” based on “what our members prefer” earlier this month.

In just the first six weeks of 2025, nearly 1000 developers have lost their positions, with reductions and closures occurring at Freejam, Splash Damage, Piranha Games, Jar of Sparks, as well as nearly 185 positions eliminated by Ubisoft. ProbablyMonsters has also initiated another round of layoffs, alongside Iron Galaxy and Sumo Group.

Earlier this week, we also reported job cuts at Liquid Sword, NetEase Games, and Toast Interactive.
