Assassin’s Creed Shadows has intriguingly kicked off with a remarkably swift start, as – merely hours after the open-world RPG’s launch – Ubisoft has disclosed that the title has already surpassed 1 million players.

“It’s not even 4PM here in Canada and Assassin’s Creed Shadows has already reached over 1 million players,” Ubisoft stated in a tweet. “Thank YOU from the depths of our hearts for joining this journey in Feudal Japan. We are beyond thrilled to embark on this experience with you!”

Not even 24 hours after the Assassin’s Creed Shadows release time, this is a remarkable achievement.

Ubisoft carefully mentions “players” rather than “sales,” indicating that some of these players might have accessed the game through Ubisoft Plus, the subscription service the company has launched on PC, Xbox, and, uh, Amazon Luna.

Precisely how Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ success compares to other titles in the series remains somewhat ambiguous since Ubisoft has never been entirely consistent in reporting figures of this nature. The company claimed that Assassin’s Creed Valhalla was the largest launch in series history when it debuted in 2020, yet didn’t provide accurate player or sales statistics at that time.

What we do know is that Shadows’ concurrent player count on Steam has already exceeded that of Valhalla’s, although it’s worth noting that Valhalla only appeared on Steam years after its initial release. Shadows is currently just over 100 players away from claiming Origins’ Steam record and roughly 20,000 players from Odyssey’s, neither of which faced the same delay in launching on Valve‘s platform.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows lists quite high on our compilation of the best Assassin’s Creed games.
