Steam achieved yet another remarkable milestone this weekend, with over 40 million users online simultaneously.

Last Friday marked the launch of Monster Hunter Wilds, which hit a peak of over 1.38 million concurrent players on Saturday night. This same figure was mirrored on Sunday, when a peak of 1.37 million players returned to the game.

Currently, Monster Hunter Wilds ranks as the second-most played game on Steam, trailing only behind the enduring Counter-Strike 2, yet surpassing other long-standing games like PUBG and Dota 2.

Monster Hunter Wilds has undoubtedly made a significant impact, boasting a play count on Steam that’s three times greater than any previous Monster Hunter title, let alone any other release from Capcom, including Resident Evil.

However, the game hasn’t had a completely smooth experience. User reviews for Monster Hunter Wilds remain “Mixed” on Steam, with only 53 percent of players currently expressing they would recommend the game, amidst a considerable amount of feedback regarding its technical performance on PC at this time.

Digital Foundry weighed in on Friday, stating they “cannot endorse the PC version” due to “significant technical issues that need addressing.”

“In summary, users with lower-end graphics cards and limited VRAM should steer clear of Monster Hunter Wilds until these concerns are resolved,” wrote Digital Foundry’s Alex Battaglia. “Higher-end systems may be able to compensate for the game’s flaws to some extent, but it remains challenging to recommend such a defective technical performance – or even identify optimized settings.”

Additional critiques have emerged regarding the game’s requirement to pay if players wish to continue altering their Monster Hunter Wilds character, although you can make one change at no cost.
