Mobile Games Dominate Africa’s Gaming Revenue Landscape
Yet, almost 9 out of 10 developers in Africa are male, indicating “a necessity to promote greater inclusiveness.”
A recent examination into Africa’s gaming market revealed that 90% of its earnings come from mobile gaming.
66 studios and 55 independent developers participated in the 2024 Africa Game Developer Watch – a 42% increase from the previous year – of which 92% of survey participants were under 34 years old.
However, only 12% of those surveyed were female, highlighting “a significant need to encourage greater inclusivity and diversity in the sector.”
South Africa tops the chart in terms of revenue, generating over $110 million from 2020 to 2023. Its entire gaming market is anticipated to expand to $333 million by 2026, primarily driven by mobile gaming and esports.
Nigeria’s gaming sector – “bolstered by a youthful, tech-savvy populace and an expanding esports landscape – brought in $249 million in 2021, while Kenya amassed $46 million in the same year, showcasing “substantial growth in mobile gaming and a focus on educational, AR, and VR games.”
