“I dedicated an entire weekend constructing this heartfelt message…”
If you haven’t discovered it yet, a brand new adult-oriented series titled Secret Level premiered on Amazon Prime in early December, and it seems to have been a tremendous success so far – to the extent that it’s been approved for Season 2!
All episodes of Secret Level revolve around video games, featuring titles like Sifu, New World, Pac-Man, Armored Core, and Mega Man, but notably only The Outer Worlds appears from Xbox’s first-party lineup.
The producers did attempt to include others, however. As revealed by executive producer Dave Wilson in an interview with Collider, they endeavored to create an episode featuring Halo‘s Master Chief and the DOOM Slayer, but it simply was not meant to be.
“The creative director at [Software] is a close friend of ours, as are the folks at Microsoft, so we made a significant request because one of the primary things both Tim and I wanted to achieve was to create something that wouldn’t normally be found in games, like crossovers. We aimed to create a Master Chief/DOOM Slayer crossover episode, and I spent an entire weekend drafting this passionate letter from my youth. And it was just as Tim noted; their response was, ‘Nah.’
Wilson continued to explain that many video game intellectual properties have “preexisting agreements” and various factors that could complicate the process when trying to secure them for a new series. It appears many companies declined their proposals, and they even “pleaded” with Valve for a Half-Life episode – which clearly did not pan out!
With Season 2 now confirmed, there’s every chance that Microsoft may see fit to approve the concept for next time around, which surely we would all love to witness! Halo and DOOM in the same episode? Make it happen, Mr. Spencer!
