Meta Halts Sales of Quest Pro Headsets Following Year of Notable Performance
Three months following Meta’s initiation of gradually phasing out its Quest Pro headset, the company has officially ceased the sale of the mixed reality device.
UploadVR observed that the Meta Quest Pro’s retail webpage now indicates it is “no longer available.” Last October, Meta announced it would continue to offer the Pro, Quest 2, and 128 GB Quest 3 until the end of 2024 or until inventory was depleted. The Quest 2’s webpage displays a similar message of being “no longer available.”
Game Developer also noted that the 128 GB Quest 3 headsets are unavailable from Meta’s store. The listing does not specify whether this is a permanent discontinuation or not.
The Quest Pro debuted in October 2022 at a price of $1,500. Unlike the company’s other headsets, this model was designed primarily for professional and business environments, with several features oriented toward facilitating participation in virtual meetings.
During its announcement, company CEO Mark Zuckerberg referred to mixed reality as “the next significant advancement in VR.” He mentioned it would “drive some of the most compelling experiences possible in VR” and help the company achieve its metaverse ambitions.
Last year, the company’s metaverse division repeatedly incurred losses, according to its financial reports for the fiscal year. Its Reality Labs division has faced ongoing challenges for quite a while, with some difficulties resulting in the shutdown of VR developer Ready at Dawn.
Before retiring the Pro and the two numbered Quest headsets, Meta attempted lowering their prices to make them more appealing to potential consumers.
The VR gaming sector encountered financial challenges throughout 2024, resulting in layoffs in studios and closures worldwide. Meanwhile, new devices like the PlayStation VR2 did not take off.
Meta is still offering three mixed reality headsets: the 512 GB variant of the Quest 3, along with the 128 GB and 256 GB iterations of the Quest 3S.
