The latest development in the ongoing saga of Ubisoft occurred just today, as the outlet Bloomberg presented a new narrative regarding the happenings behind the curtain at the French game developer.
According to this recent narrative, the founders of Ubisoft — the Guillemot family — along with major stakeholder Tencent, are considering launching “a new initiative” linked to Ubisoft. This ‘initiative’ may possibly involve leveraging some popular Ubisoft franchises “as they aim to enhance the French video game company’s worth,” the report states.
To be clear, we are not entirely certain what is truly meant by ‘a new initiative’, and the report is quite ambiguous on specifics as well. What it does reveal is that “a potential agreement would enable Tencent to acquire a stake in the initiative and gain increased control over some of Ubisoft’s intellectual properties” – suggesting that the current ownership situation at Ubisoft could be the real concern.
While the root of the problem isn’t exactly clear, we do know that Ubisoft is indeed seeking investors. Last week, amidst the recent delay for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the company stated that it would “explore various transformational strategic and financial options to maximize value for stakeholders” – essentially, it aims to secure the highest possible returns for its games and IP if a deal were to transpire.
Ultimately, Bloomberg reports that “discussions are ongoing and no conclusive decisions have been reached,” according to sources who spoke with the outlet. When asked for comments, Ubisoft merely referred back to its statement from last week that aligned with the latest AC Shadows delay.
