John Wick spin-off star Ana de Armas recalls accidentally telling Keanu Reeves that she hadn’t seen The Matrix: “That will never not be embarrassing”
Ballerina leading star Ana de Armas has shared an “awkward” experience from the moment she first encountered her fellow leading star Keanu Reeves, during which she mistakenly told him that she hadn’t seen The Matrix.
“I met him when I could barely communicate in English after relocating to LA, 10 years ago. My first encounter with Keanu occurred in Santiago de Chile during lunch with the creators of Knock Knock, our initial film together,” de Armas reminisced while speaking at this year’s CinemaCon (as reported by The Hollywood Reporter).
Released in 2015, Knock Knock was directed by Eli Roth and tells the story of a family man (Reeves) who discovers two supposedly lost women (one of whom was portrayed by de Armas) appearing on his doorstep while his wife and kids are away.
“We were seated across from one another at the table, and I felt incredibly anxious as anyone would when facing Keanu Reeves,” she continued. “I struggled to converse because I was so conscious of my English, and I was genuinely making an effort to keep up with the discussion.”
As the filmmakers delved into Reeves’ career, the talk quickly shifted to The Matrix. “He turned to me and inquired if I had seen it. I responded, ‘The Matrix? No.’ Everyone at the table looked stunned, and someone promptly came over to me and said in Spanish,” de Armas recounted. “‘You haven’t seen La Matrix?’ I was like, ‘Oh, La Matrix. Yes, I have seen that one.’ That will always be a cringeworthy moment for me.”
