The latest online video game to receive approval for a film adaptation is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, an upcoming French JRPG influenced by classic turn-based games such as Final Fantasy, the Tales series, Lost Odyssey, and Persona.

According to Variety, the developers of Clair Obscur, Sandfall Interactive, are collaborating with Sage Kitchen to create the film adaptation, while Kepler Interactive is managing the publishing duties. Details regarding casting and direction are currently being finalized.

“We are excited to partner with Sandfall Interactive to bring the rich, immersive universe of Expedition 33 to the cinema,” stated Sage Kitchen co-founders Dmitri M. Johnson and Mike Goldberg. “The game’s engaging storyline and intricate characters lay a strong groundwork for a cinematic adventure that will appeal to both gamers and film enthusiasts.”

Clair Obscur marks the first project from Sandfall. The game is set in a fantastical realm inspired by Belle Époque France, which is threatened by the Paintress, who paints a number on her monument each year, causing everyone of that age to vanish mysteriously. With the number decreasing each year, the urgency to eliminate her wrathful influence intensifies.

“Teaming up with Story Kitchen enables us to broaden the universe of Clair Obscur beyond the realm of gaming,”
