Paweł Sasko, associate director on the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel codenamed Project Orion, has shared the Witcher 3 quest that nearly drove him to his limits during its development.

Sasko is a seasoned CD Projekt Red developer and served as the lead quest designer on The Witcher 3. He is open about the projects he’s involved in, which is why we now have this intriguing tale regarding one of the more significant missions in The Witcher 3’s main storyline: the Battle of Kaer Morhen, which occurs near the end of the narrative. It appears this quest presented quite a challenge for Sasko.

“The most difficult quest I have ever designed and executed,” Sasko mentioned in response to a fan on Twitter. “Particularly the technical aspects were quite taxing, with so many custom solutions and branches. I lost a lot of sleep and my sanity trying to piece it together. I’m glad you enjoy it.”

The most challenging quest I have ever crafted and deployed. The technical aspects, in particular, were overwhelming, with numerous custom choices and branches. I lost sleep and my mind while attempting to piece it together. Thrilled you are enjoying it 🥰January 21, 2025

As a gaming journalist rather than a developer, I cannot fully grasp the intricacies of creating a game like The Witcher 3 with its multitude of choices and branching paths, but I can only imagine it is immensely more complicated than crafting a more straightforward game of similar size. Nonetheless, this did not deter the team at CDPR from enhancing player choices in Cyberpunk 2077, and I hope whatever arises from Cyberpunk 2 and The Witcher 4 will be even more intricate.

It also hasn’t stopped the dedicated CDPR developers over at Insurrection Wolves from making their forthcoming vampire open-world RPG focused on “maximizing player freedom.”
