It has been an agonizingly long wait for Indiana Jones enthusiasts, but finally, a new online game in the series is on its way. Initially announced in 2021, Indiana Jones and The Great Circle is expected to arrive later this year, offering fans a grand opportunity to wear the iconic fedora of the two-fisted archaeologist as he utilizes his intellect and whip to uncover historical sites and defeat Nazis.

With the game nearing its release, Microsoft and MachineGames have disclosed more about its story elements and showcased some of its whip-cracking gameplay in action. Although certain aspects are still shrouded in secrecy, here is all we know about Indiana Jones and The Great Circle so far.

Release Date

Originally unveiled back in 2021, Indiana Jones and The Great Circle is currently slated to launch on December 9, 2024, a Monday. Similar to other first-party Xbox titles, players may be able to access it earlier by purchasing the Premium Edition, allowing them to start on December 6.

PlayStation owners will have to wait a bit longer to experience the game, as it is currently scheduled for PS5 release in Spring 2025.

Will Indiana Jones and The Great Circle be available on Game Pass?

As with Microsoft’s leading first-party releases, the new Indiana Jones game is expected to be a day-one addition to Game Pass.

Indiana Jones and The Great Circle will launch first on Xbox Series X|S and PC, followed by its release on PS5 in 2025. If you plan to play on PC, here’s how you can get the game for $1.

Indiana Jones and The Great Circle Editions

You can purchase the Indiana Jones game in various editions. There’s the standard version, the Premium Edition which grants early access, and a Collector’s Edition that includes an adventure journal, high-quality digital content, and an 11-inch globe with a magnetic plane and a hidden compartment.

Set between Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade, The Great Circle follows Jones on a globe-trotting quest as the renowned archaeologist seeks to unravel one of history’s greatest enigmas. Since it is set in 1937, Jones will face fierce opposition from Nazis who seek to loot the world’s treasures for their own gain. The relic hunter will not be alone, reuniting with old friends and forming partnerships with new allies during his journey.

As for what the Great Circle entails? MachineGames isn’t quite ready to divulge all the details just yet. Still, game director Jerk Gustafsson did mention how these circles are used for navigation systems and that a “real and enigmatic” large circle on Earth connects several historic sites. “Their connection has remained a mystery, and this provides the perfect adventure for our game,” stated Gustafsson.

According to MachineGames, the game might include nearly four hours of cutscenes, which is comparable to the runtime of two Indiana Jones films.

Get ready for some digital exploration, as The Great Circle will transport Indy from his familiar territory of Marshall College in Connecticut to the ancient halls of the Vatican, the arid deserts of Egypt, the submerged temples of Sukhothai, and the icy heights of the Himalayas. These environments will present Indy with human adversaries and ancient traps as he solves puzzles, leading to some blockbuster action sequences when chaos ensues.

“We wanted to depict where Indy would be at this moment, having just parted ways with Marion, feeling somewhat lost again, consumed by his own obsessions with his work,” Gustafsson elaborated.

Indiana Jones enthusiasts can anticipate an official expedition as MachineGames collaborated closely with Lucasfilm Games, utilizing a collection of exclusive Indiana Jones content to assist in developing this adventurous journey across the globe.

Gameplay

According to experience director Jens Andersson, The Great Circle will primarily be a first-person experience with a few segments in third-person. “Our game is designed to place you in the role of an iconic hero,” Andersson explained. “By focusing on first-person perspective, you can truly embody Indy. This viewpoint allows you to immerse yourself in this world–enabling you to explore and encounter things on a more personal level.”

True to the classic Indiana Jones style, you will engage in punching, shooting, and whipping your way through adversaries, but if you’d prefer a more stealthy approach, you can evade combat and remain in the shadows. If you have played MachineGames’ Wolfenstein titles, this will feel quite familiar, as those games also balanced gameplay between overt action and covert operations. And if you’re concerned about harming animals, the game offers a very humane method to handle them.

Environments also include optional puzzles to tackle, and when situations become challenging, Indy can utilize his surroundings, quick thinking, and whip to his advantage. Throughout the third-person sequences, the camera will zoom out to offer players a broader view of Indy as he navigates traps and employs his whip to overcome them.

“Indiana Jones and the Great Circle appears to blend numerous genres while striking an ideal balance among them, all while honoring the essence of Indiana Jones, the archaeology professor and adventurer,” Kurt Indovina observed in a hands-on preview of the game.

Graphics and performance

On Xbox Series X|S, MachineGames aims to achieve a performance of 60fps. Game director Axel Torvenius mentioned that the game should “feel cohesive” and that it aims for “running smoothly at 60[fps] on both [Xbox Series X and S].”

Is Lucasfilm involved in the development of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle?

One reassuring aspect of the creation of this new Indiana Jones game is that MachineGames has worked extensively with Lucasfilm Games to develop an authentic installment within the franchise. You can see the results in Indy’s appearance and the world around him, as the game resembles visuals straight out of the original trilogy of films. Lifelong Indiana Jones fan and Bethesda creative director Todd Howard is also engaged, as he will frequently check in on the game’s progress in his capacity as an executive producer.

Kind of! While Ford’s weathered face has been digitally adapted to his in-game character model–signature facial scar included–he may not be lending his voice to the character. Instead, Troy Baker will be providing the voice.
