How the Monkey Island Saga Shaped Jude Law’s Upcoming Star Wars Adventure in Skeleton Crew
The upcoming Star Wars series, Skeleton Crew, was partly inspired by the point-and-click adventure games of Monkey Island.
This latest Star Wars show features Jude Law in the role of Jod Na Nawood. “Skeleton Crew narrates the tale of four children on a quest to find their home planet after becoming lost in the Star Wars universe, encountering bizarre aliens and perilous locations along their journey,” states the official summary on Disney Plus.
But, what does this have to do with Monkey Island, you may wonder?
Well, it all begins with the children mentioned earlier. “There’s a fun thematic parallel between our kids and the pirate crew,” co-showrunner Jon Watts shared with SFX magazine (via GamesRadar). “In many ways, pirates are just grown-up children who resist authority and seek their own path, bickering over who should take charge.”
The Skeleton Crew showrunner further revealed that the team drew inspiration from “classic pirate serials,” emphasizing “swashbuckling” films like The Sea Hawk [1940] and Captain Blood [1935]. Then, he touched on the video game influences that contributed to shaping Skeleton Crew.
“Another significant fandom of mine from Lucasfilm is the Monkey Island games,” Watts expressed, instantly winning me over. “I enjoyed all the pirate elements in those games and felt we could incorporate a bit of that essence into Skeleton Crew.”
As a huge Monkey Island enthusiast, this single statement has sparked my interest in Skeleton Crew (I must admit, I was starting to feel a bit of fatigue from the Disney Star Wars series). Are you inclined to watch it as well?
