IO Interactive’s Hitman: World of Assassination has surpassed 75 million players globally. In a statement, the Danish studio further revealed that the stealth title achieved 1 million players in December 2024, and “remains as popular as ever” since the original Hitman debuted in 2016.
Following the episodic launch of that title, IO released Hitman 2 as a complete package, allowing players to access the main game within the sequel. This approach was repeated with 2021’s Hitman 3, culminating in the entire reboot trilogy being integrated into a single live-service entity.
According to IO, Assassination is “the most successful Hitman game to date.” For some context, Hitman’s 2016 reboot attracted more than 13 million players within two years, and the entire trilogy had reached 50 million players a few months post-launch of Hitman 3.
The studio generally emphasizes player counts over sales figures. However, where it has mentioned sales, it simply noted that the titles resulted in a significant revenue boost for the company, stirring interest in the various entries of the trilogy.
Hitman is no longer sufficient for IO Interactive
Looking ahead, IO stated that 2025 would see additional post-launch content for World of Assassination. The title is scheduled for a release on PlayStation VR2 in March.
Beyond Hitman, the studio is currently developing a James Bond game and an online RPG codenamed ‘Project Epic.’ Additionally, it is set to publish a proof of concept action game for Bear a Rocket Boy’s forthcoming MMO, Everywhere.
