Hideaki Nishino has been appointed as the president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), the company behind PlayStation.
Sony indicated that this transition aims to “enhance synergies” throughout the organization and signifies a development in the leadership framework that was revealed in May 2024, which resulted in Nishino becoming the CEO of the Platform Business Group and Hermen Hulst being appointed as CEO of the Studio Business Group.
Former Guerrilla Games head Hulst will maintain that position but will now report to Nishino.
“Nishino will continue to function as CEO of the Platform Business Group, while Hulst will oversee the development, publishing, and business operations of SIE’s first-party content,” states a press release.
“He is also tasked with the development of games across various platforms, including PlayStation consoles and PCs, and expanding video game IP into new media through PlayStation Productions.”
This news comes as SIE chairman Hiroki Totoki resigns to assume the role of president and CEO at Sony Group Corporation. SIE is also letting go of SVP of finance, corporate development, and strategy, Lin Tao, who has been appointed as the CFO of Sony Group Corporation. The company plans to announce Tao’s successor at a future date.
These changes in leadership will take effect on April 1, 2025.
PlayStation to concentrate on IP growth and technological innovation under Nishino
Outgoing SIE chairman Totoki believes this restructuring will help SIE and PlayStation “achieve new heights.”
“It has been a joy working closely with Hermen and Nishino, gaining insights into the dynamic and fast-evolving landscape of Sony Interactive Entertainment. As we pass the leadership baton to Nishino and this remarkable team, I am optimistic that SIE will scale new heights in the coming years,” stated Totoki.
“After 30 years of delivering exceptional entertainment globally, this signifies a thrilling new chapter for SIE, underscoring its commitment to nurturing creativity and establishing meaningful connections for millions of players.”
Expressing his thoughts on the industry, Nishino stated that technology and creativity are SIE’s core strengths and committed to focusing on crafting experiences that “provide entertainment for all.”
SIE and PlayStation Studios will be creating these experiences with a reduced number of developers, however, following a wave of job cuts and studio closures in 2024.
“I am truly privileged to lead Sony Interactive Entertainment. Technology and creativity are among our strongest assets as we aim to develop experiences that offer entertainment for everyone,” said Nishino. “We intend to grow the PlayStation community in innovative ways, such as through IP expansion, while also delivering cutting-edge technology.”
