Get Ready for the Thrills: Terminator 2 Takes a Nostalgic Spin as an Arcade Side-Scroller!
About 35 years after facing a crushing wave of disillusionment from Ocean Software’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day on the ZX Spectrum 128K, I feel compelled to inform you that a fresh video game adaptation of James Cameron’s blockbuster is set to release this September. Yet, despite the relentless advancement of technology, this game will also be in 2D.
Terminator 2D: No Fate is developed by Bitmap Bureau – the team responsible for games like Xeno Crisis and 88 Heroes – and it aims to deliver some authentic retro-style side-scrolling action influenced by “legendary scenes from Terminator 2” alongside “original stories.”
Its standout feature is its visually appealing pixel art, and as shown in Terminator 2D’s announcement trailer, there’s also a segment where you can sneak around a bar as the T-800, taking down foes while unabashedly unclothed. Interestingly, the T-800 (in the nude or otherwise) is just one of several characters you’ll be able to control in Terminator 2D.
Bitmap Bureau states that the T-800 has been crafted to showcase his mass and strength, featuring moves like a powerful shoulder charge. Although he moves slower compared to Terminator 2D’s other playable characters – Sarah Connor and John Connor – he possesses remarkable endurance. In contrast, Sarah is nimble and quick, excelling in close combat with a sliding attack. However, she can also utilize her laser sight, which locks her in place but significantly increases damage.
On the other hand, John Connor will be a playable character as an adult during the game’s Future War missions. While he isn’t as quick as Sarah, he can dodge attacks with a tactical roll and focuses on mid-to-long-range combat strategies.
