George R.R. Martin Teases Possible Sequel to In The Lost Lands

According to a concise tale by George R.R. Martin, the forthcoming fantasy film In the Lost Lands features one of Martin’s most captivating characters, a sorceress named Grey Alys who possesses a remarkably rich history. This has attracted notable actress Milla Jovovich and director Paul W.S. Anderson to explore her story further – and Martin agrees.

“I would really like to explore Grey Alys in more depth, and Paul and I discuss it frequently,” Jovovich reveals to GamesRadar+. “We’ve had extensive conversations about her origins, where she hails from, the nature of her curse, and how she acquired it. There are so many inquiries to delve into.”

Based on the short story of the same name from the 1982 fantasy anthology Amazons II, the film narrates the tale of a witch, Grey Alys (Jovovich), who is sent to the ‘Lost Lands’ by a queen eager to transform into a werewolf. However, we initially encounter Alys standing trial for witchcraft, indicating that there is a considerable backstory to her character that warrants exploration beyond her immediate quest.

It seems that Martin supports this notion, as director Anderson states, “I know George would be on board too, because his original concept was to create a series of stories centered around Grey Alys. So fingers crossed, this could motivate him to pursue that.”

When questioned about their choice to adapt In the Lost Lands instead of Martin’s other writings, Anderson explains, “George had penned a fairy tale that was dark and aimed at adults, which I found incredibly exciting.” Likewise, Jovovich mentions that “the opportunity to craft something beautiful from [the short story]” was a significant draw for her. Additionally, she is a devoted fan of Martin’s work herself.
