“Fortnite Remix Finale Breaks Records with 14 Million Live Viewers”
Dwell spectacular will pay tribute to the game’s history while revealing its forthcoming potential.
14.3 million participants were present in-game tonight for Fortnite’s Remix Finale event, according to the game’s publicly available player statistics, while countless others were watching online via
That number exceeds the 9.8 million present in-game earlier this month when the Fortnite Remix mini-season launched with a live-streamed performance in Times Square featuring Snoop Dogg and Ice Spice. Moreover, it’s more than double the 5.6 million players who logged in for the hour-long Doctor Doom boss battle in October. Most notably, it has also surpassed last December’s highly publicized The Big Bang event, which saw 10 million players participate at the end of the game’s immensely popular OG season.
The largest event ever recorded within Fortnite was its Marvel season finale featuring Galactus, once again during the lockdown of 2020, with 15.3 million players in attendance.
It has been some time since Fortnite itself has commented on its player statistics. This evening, Epic Games celebrated the immense turnout for the Remix Finale, confirming it was a record for any Fortnite live event. Other than concerts – which typically draw significant attention but are brief – Epic Games last highlighted a player milestone at the start of last year’s OG season. At that time, an astounding 44 million players logged in over 24 hours, marking Fortnite’s biggest day ever. (Could this record be broken next week when Fortnite OG returns as a permanent mode?)
Fortnite’s Remix Finale kicked off at the newly refurbished Agency headquarters of Snoop Dogg, the site of the beloved Chapter 2 live event The Device. Here, players experienced the first of several nods to previous Fortnite live events, as pylons rose from the waters surrounding the building – now adorned with loudspeakers – and the ‘Device’ itself appeared – now a gigantic microphone for a skyscraper-sized Snoop Dogg to perform and rap alongside. Snoop’s segment of the event continued with the rapper freestyle-rapping next to a cel-shaded version of himself, traversing the Agency and also in a planet-situated segment where players bounced alongside a planet’s rings.
As Snoop soared off on the Battle Bus, Eminem appeared for a segment inspired by his appearance in last year’s The Big Bang event. This was followed by an exciting anime-inspired segment where Snoop battled Fortnite’s fan-favorite robot (or Mecha Team Leader, to give its full name) from the game’s memorable 2019 mecha versus monster showdown.
Next up was Ice Spice, initially featured in a more personal segment that saw players follow the rapper across city rooftops. A subsequent performance saw her grow to kaiju size, before players were led to the final segment of the performance featuring the late artist and self-proclaimed Fortnite fan Juice WRLD, who passed away in 2019.
The way Fortnite incorporated Juice WRLD’s participation was intriguing. For the first time, the game showcased a prominent figure who has passed, yet this segment felt like a respectful and engaging homage. Players witnessed a large statue of the artist surrounded by stars and Fortnite’s rift butterflies, rapping on the horizon. One segment, featuring the newly released song Empty Out Your Pockets, allowed players to transform and navigate as one of those butterflies (including a nod to the game’s 2018 butterfly event, too). And there was more Juice WRLD to come – at the very end of the live performance, players had the opportunity to see the premiere of the official music video for the song. It was an elaborate animation set within Fortnite’s universe, showcasing many of its characters, perfectly timed with tonight’s events.
As the music drew to a close, followers of Fortnite’s narrative were treated to something more – a glimpse into the game’s future, with some key characters returning for the upcoming journey.
The conclusion of the event featured long-time Fortnite hero Jones and Chapter 5’s new protagonist Hope zooming off into a rift, shortly followed by the Battle Bus and what appeared to be a shard of the Zero Point. Wow! As players followed, they were transported to… the game’s new Japan-inspired battle royale Island, set to launch tomorrow morning.
