Final Fantasy XIV: A New Era of Gaming Awaits on Mobile Devices
Final Fantasy XIV is expanding to mobile devices, thanks to Lightspeed Studios and key developers, including director and producer Naoki Yoshida.
Square Enix’s popular free-to-play MMO is set to arrive on mobile gadgets, building on the game’s introduction on Xbox Series X|S earlier this year. Similar to the console version, mobile players will assume the role of a Warrior of Light and interact with others while experiencing Final Fantasy XIV’s main and post-launch narratives.
Yoshida characterized the new version as “a sibling to FFXIV, aiming to replicate the splendor of the classic’s lore and combat mechanics” for a new audience. Square Enix has previously adapted many mainline and spin-off Final Fantasy titles to mobile, often with adjustments to the titles’ visuals or gameplay.
The game will debut in China first through playtests, followed by a global launch “shortly thereafter.” As of this writing, it’s unclear whether the two versions of Final Fantasy XIV will support any form of cross-play or cross-progression.
Major games on mobile screens
In recent years, prominent console and PC franchises have transitioned to mobile to reach more players and generate additional revenue. Just last year, Call of Duty unveiled a new mobile version of its popular battle royale Warzone, and Ubisoft is looking to do the same with the Tom Clancy series, including Rainbow Six and The Division.
Other live-service games like Warframe and Destiny 2 are also making similar moves. In the case of the latter, its mobile title Destiny: Rising will be a spin-off of the franchise rather than a direct port.
However, not all major games are suited for mobile: last year, EA discontinued the mobile version of Apex Legends and another in development for its Battlefield series. Likewise, iPhone adaptations of Capcom’s 2023 remake of Resident Evil 4 and Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Mirage reportedly struggled to attract much of an audience following their summer release.
