The release date for the Blu-ray of The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is scheduled for February 18. Three physical editions are available for preorder at Amazon, Walmart, and Gruv. The deluxe edition of The War of the Rohirrim features a steelbook case, 4K and 1080p Blu-ray discs, along with a voucher for the digital version of the anime. Additionally, there’s a standard 4K Blu-ray edition available for as little as $28 and a 1080p Blu-ray starting at only $23. Both of these options include a digital copy of the film as well. If you wish to watch the anime now, you can rent or purchase the digital version on Prime Video for $20 or $25, respectively.
Special Features of The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim
Each of the three physical editions includes a collection of featurettes alongside the movie.
The War of the Rohirrim premiered in theaters on December 13 and was available on digital platforms just two weeks later. The film struggled to reach $10 million at the box office, which likely led to its swift digital release. Audience and critic responses have been mixed; the anime holds a “mixed” Metascore average across both categories on GameSpot’s sister site Metacritic.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim’s Collector’s Edition Steelbook includes 4K Blu-ray, 1080p Blu-ray, and digital formats of the original animation. With preorder guarantees available at Amazon and Walmart, you will definitely pay the lowest price available as soon as you check out.
Initially, War of the Rohirrim was available for preorder at $38 via Amazon and Walmart, but regrettably, the price has risen to $51. You may still secure a copy for $38 at Gruv, and we wouldn’t be shocked to see the price return to that level at Amazon and Walmart.
The stunning steelbook cover features artwork of Helm Hammerhand (voiced by Brian Cox) and Hera (voiced by Gaia Luminous). The interior of the case showcases a map of Rohan, which serves as a nice tribute to the novels, many of which include similarly styled maps printed inside the covers or as fold-out inserts.
If you’re indifferent to the condition of the steelbook, you may want to consider preordering the standard edition of the 4K Blu-ray edition for $28 at Walmart. Your preorder will technically be fulfilled and dispatched by Gruv, yet you will still qualify for Walmart’s preorder price guarantee. Currently, Amazon has raised the price of the 4K standard edition to $37.49, although prices can fluctuate, and you won’t be charged until the order ships.
The 4K Blu-ray standard edition includes a 4K disc and a digital copy; however, you will not receive the 1080p Blu-ray disc included in the Steelbook Edition. This edition utilizes one of the key promotional posters for its cover art.
The standard 1080p Blu-ray edition is available for preorder at $23 at Walmart and $31 at Amazon. Again, both retailers offer preorder price guarantees, and Walmart’s preorders are shipped and sold by Gruv. The Blu-ray edition also comes with a voucher for the digital version of the anime.
The cover art for the Blu-ray edition matches the second key promotional poster that was released in the lead-up to the theatrical release.
The War of the Rohirrim was produced by the anime studio Sola Digital Arts. The film is set 183 years before the events of The Lord of the Rings and takes inspiration from Peter Jackson’s cherished trilogy of films. According to an entry in the appendices of The Lord of the Rings, The War of the Rohirrim centers around the kingdom of Rohan and its king Helm Hammerhand—the inspiration for Helm’s Deep—and the kingdom’s conflict with the Dunlending raiders of Dunedain.
Recently, Walmart launched an exclusive steelbook version of The Fellowship of the Ring on January 7. Following the initial preorders selling out, Walmart has replenished stock of the movie for $35. If the steelbook looks familiar, it is because it is the same steelbook design featured in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Exclusive Steelbook Collection that was reprinted last year and quickly sold out. It remains uncertain whether Walmart might also release The Two Towers and The Return of the King in the near future.
In other news regarding Lord of the Rings reissues, the massive 5,471-piece Barad-dur Lego set debuted at major retailers this month. Originally introduced last year as a Lego Store exclusive, the $460 set constructs Sauron’s iconic tower, complete with the Eye of Sauron atop the 32-inch Lego creation. Barad-dur joins the similarly extensive Rivendell set as the only two Lord of the Rings Lego models currently in production.

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Collector’s Editions
As previously mentioned, The War of the Rohirrim aligns with the appendices of The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien crafted many additional stories and histories of Middle-earth while creating The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. To properly appreciate The Lord of the Rings (and its appendices), whether before or after watching The War of the Rohirrim, there are some beautiful hardcover editions currently discounted on Amazon.
The 2024 hardcover Collector’s Editions of The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and The Silmarillion feature stunning hardcover designs with foil-stamped cover art, colored edges, ribbon bookmarks, and Middle-earth maps as endpapers. The Collector’s Edition divides The Lord of the Rings into its three volumes, which can be acquired individually or as a set. Amazon is currently offering The Lord of the Rings Collector’s Edition Box Set for $76 (previously $105). However, it’s worth noting that purchasing the individual volumes is cheaper at the moment. You may miss out on the decorative slipcase and fold-out map, but you can save the difference towards acquiring the matching Collector’s Editions of The Hobbit or The Silmarillion.
Tolkien Illustrated Editions
We highly encourage exploring the Tolkien Illustrated Editions of The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and The Silmarillion.
The key highlight here is that The Lord of the Rings Illustrated Edition includes 30 stunning full-color illustrations by Tolkien, making it one of the most beautiful editions of his classic fantasy novel available. It features red-stained edges adorned with Elvish script, a dust jacket with embossed text and a depiction of The Eye of Sauron. This edition also comes with two fold-out maps and a ribbon bookmark. If you’d rather not spend $47 on a single book and prefer the complete tale in one volume, Amazon also offers The Lord of the Rings Deluxe Edition, which has a lovely suede-like cover, for just under $20.
