PlayStation and Nintendo also faced challenges last year
- by Ben Kerry
Throughout the year, we monitored various sales trends for the Xbox Series X and S consoles, and unfortunately, the news has not been very promising for Microsoft. A fresh overview of the entire year 2024 regarding European hardware sales portrays a rather bleak scenario for all three major platforms, with Xbox notably suffering.
Outlet VGC has disclosed the most recent 2024 gaming sales data for continental Europe, emphasizing hardware. Compared to 2023, PS5 console sales decreased by 20%, Switch sales were down 15%, while Xbox Series X|S sales plummeted by an astonishing 48% when 2024 is stacked against the previous year.
However, there are some qualifications to consider regarding this data. Firstly, these sales figures only represent the regions of Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Italy, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland – the UK is omitted, just like the US. VGC also notes that “a lack of significant releases” negatively impacted console sales across the board throughout 2024.
Despite what seems to be somewhat disheartening news, there are reasons to be a bit more hopeful for 2025. If GTA 6 launches this year and proves to be a next-gen blockbuster, it is likely to boost console sales, which could benefit both Xbox and PlayStation. As for Nintendo, they’re set to announce an entirely new console this year – so we’re looking forward to more positive hardware news overall in 2025.
