Dragon Quest III: The HD-2D Remake Surpasses 2 Million Sales Milestone
Square Enix’s HD-2D reimagining of Dragon Quest III has achieved sales of 2 million units globally since its release on November 14.
The turn-based role-playing game debuted on PlayStation 5, PC, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series X|S. It is also the latest reworking of the 1988 NES classic, which has seen renewals on Super Famicom, Game Boy Color, mobile devices, and newer consoles throughout the years.
When compared to prior HD-2D titles, Dragon Quest III has outperformed its forerunners, Octopath Traveler II and Triangle Strategy. Last year, Square Enix announced that Octopath moved 1 million units within approximately four months. The series has amassed a total of 4 million copies by this past June. Meanwhile, Triangle Strategy reached 1 million units sold by December 2022, approximately nine months after its launch that March.
Octopath Traveler, Triangle Strategy, and Dragon Quest
Since the releases of Octopath Traveler and Triangle Strategy, the former has made its way to Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, and will be available on Game Pass alongside Octopath Traveler until January 2026. This past Halloween, Square Enix transitioned Triangle Strategy to Meta Quest 2, 3, and Pro, and removed the game from the Nintendo Switch eShop earlier this week.
Regarding player engagement, Dragon Quest III HD-2D has reached a peak of 45,357 concurrent players on Steam. Upon launch, it attracted 37,323 players, making it Square Enix’s largest single-player launch on that platform.
Square Enix continues to pursue the HD-2D approach with plans for remakes of Dragon Quest I and Dragon Quest II. These two titles are set to launch on the same platforms as Dragon Quest III HD-2D in 2025 and may also be bundled together as a single package.
