Diving into Aquatic Wingspan: A Surprising Twist in Tabletop Gaming!

The distributor of Wingspan has revealed its upcoming board game – Finspan.

Transitioning from the sky to the seas, it centers around aquatic life of every variety and is set to launch on January 22 (presumably directly from the Stonemaier Games store) followed by a gradual retail rollout in February. Similar to Wingspan, Finspan is an engine-building board game that allows players to gather fish across a variety of habitats, from vibrant coral reefs to the haunting depths of the ocean. It accommodates 1 to 5 players and is expected to last between 45 and 60 minutes from start to finish.

Although Wingspan creator Elizabeth Hargrave wasn’t directly involved in the design of Finspan (which was developed by David Gordon and Michael O’Connell), she provided insights at “multiple critical stages during the development process.” The gameplay mechanics will also feel familiar to enthusiasts of the top board games, but this time fish can be either consumed or discarded to free up space. The theme of diving has also been integrated into the gameplay.

This marks the second Wingspan spin-off we’ve seen thus far (Wyrmspan

I also appreciate how the diving theme has been intricately integrated into the mechanics. You can either collect fish or dive deep to trigger specific effects on your turn, and while fans will enjoy a thematic variant of Wingspan’s action die.

Regarding the game, Hargrave mentions, “Fish have been an unexpectedly frequent request from Wingspan fans, but I didn’t feel I had the capacity to do them justice. So I’m truly pleased that someone else stepped up to take this project on. Just as I did with Wyrmspan, I played the game and offered feedback on the design at several crucial stages of the development process. It’s been such a fascinating puzzle to help create games that feel like they’re part of the Wingspan family, while still providing a unique gameplay experience.”

For recommendations on what to play next, don’t miss these popularboard games for adults. Concerning Finspan’s predecessor, Wrymspan feels more intricate and isolating than Wingspan, but that’s just the nature of spelunking.
