Diablo 4‘s Season 7 is set to launch on January 21, and as is usually the case with patch updates for Blizzard’s action RPG, the list of modifications and bug resolutions is exceptionally extensive.

The latest season, the Season of Witchcraft, centers around players developing innovative builds to utilize a variety of Witchcraft abilities, many of which are inspired by Diablo 3’s Witch Doctor. However, even for those not looking to engage with the new seasonal features, there are numerous significant updates to the game’s core systems and classes worth noting.

At the top of the changes are Runewords. These potent socketable items are exclusive to owners of Diablo 4’s Vessel of Hatred expansion and are receiving substantial enhancements in patch 2.1. The quantity of Offering generated from many Ritual Runes will significantly increase, while the cost to activate Invocation Runes will decrease. Invocation Runes that previously lacked Overflow bonuses will now have them, making Runewords more advantageous than ever.

Regarding class modifications, many players will be eager to understand how the Spiritborn is being adjusted, given that it was by far the most favored (and powerful) class in Season 6 owing to its introduction in the Vessel of Hatred. Several bugs that inadvertently granted the Spiritborn excessive power, such as Masterwork Resolve stacking and the Viscous Shield Paragon Board node dealing additional damage than intended, have been corrected.

This will moderately reduce the overall power of the Spiritborn, but Blizzard is compensating players by boosting many of the class’s underused abilities. Centipede fans can look forward to buffs for The Devourer (which now inflicts extra damage based on a player’s Healing Received bonus) and the Centipede’s primary Spirit Hall, where Centipede skills will now inflict 70% poison damage over six seconds.

As for other classes, they will all receive enhancements. Barbarians will enjoy a substantial buff to Hammer of the Ancients and a notable adjustment to their Walking Arsenal passive. Meanwhile, the Sorcerer is gaining significant Paragon Board buffs along with two new Ball Lightning Unique items to experiment with. Rogues will see a few buffs to some underperforming Paragon nodes while also receiving enhancements to Shadow Clones, and Druids will benefit from major improvements to Shred and its Ultimate abilities, such as Cataclysm and Shred. Last but not least, Necromancers will benefit from numerous updates to minions.

Speaking of minions, the new season also includes a revamp of summoned minions, with Blizzard looking to make the terminology of summoning abilities and their interactions more consistent across all classes. This involves labeling all skills that summon creatures as Summoning abilities, attributing damage dealt by summons to the player character across the board (thus allowing summoned units to effectively interact with all of a player’s damage modifiers, multipliers, and triggers), and updating the phrasing on various skills for improved clarity.

“Summoning abilities have displayed inconsistencies among the classes, making it challenging to understand how to optimize their damage or which effects would work with your summons,” Blizzard notes in the patch notes. “This update intends to unify their interactions by crediting the damage they deal to the player, rather than the summoned entity.”

    Virulent

    • Changed from Utility to Offensive trait.
    • Previous – When Rabies infects an enemy, reduce its Cooldown by 0.2-0.99 seconds. This Cooldown reduction is tripled when infecting Elite enemies.
    • Now – When Rabies infects an enemy, reduce its Cooldown by 0.2-0.99 seconds, tripled when affecting Elite foes. You deal 25% [X] to 25-50% [X] increased damage to enemies afflicted by Rabies.

    Runeworker’s Conduit

    • Previous – Critical Strikes with Storm Abilities you cast energize the air around you for 3 seconds, causing a Lightning Bolt to periodically strike an enemy in the area for Lightning damage. Your Lightning Bolts inflict 20-40% increased damage.
    • Now – Critical Strikes with Storm Abilities cause Lightning Bolts to periodically assault nearby foes for 3 seconds, each inflicting Lightning damage. Your Lightning Bolt damage is increased by 50% and grows by 15% for every 100 Energy of Mind you possess.

    • Previous – Blight Chills enemies by 15% every second.
    • Now – Blight has a 25% chance to directly Freeze enemies on contact for 3 seconds, and its affected area also Chills enemies by 15% every second.

    Developer’s Note: The effect Freeze works with the smaller projectiles from the Ebonpiercer Unique item.

    Bone Spear

    • Damage increased from 85% to 100%.

    Supernatural Bone Spear

    • Previous – Bone Spear renders the primary target Weak for 3 seconds.
    • Now – Bone Spear renders the primary target Weak for 3 seconds and inflicts 30% increased Overpower damage. Bone Spear inflicts 40% additional Overpower damage and restores 5% Maximum Life after performing an Overpower hit.

    Paranormal Bone Spear

    • Previous – Bone Spear has a 5% increased Critical Strike Chance. If Bone Spear’s main projectile Severely Strikes, it fires 2 additional Bone Shards upon destruction.
    • Now – Bone Spear offers a 5% extra Critical Strike Chance. If its main projectile Severely Strikes, 2 extra Bone Shards are created upon expiration, and you also regain 10% Maximum Essence for five seconds.

    Enhanced Cut

    • Previous – Cut damages enemies along its path for 75% of its initial damage.
    • Now – Cut inflicts 85% of its initial damage along its path and Slows enemies by 40% for 3 seconds.

    Paranormal Cut

    • Previous – Every third cast of Cut makes enemies Weak for 3 seconds.
    • Now – Every third cast of Cut Fears enemies and renders them Weak for 3 seconds.

    Supernatural Cut

    • Previous – Cut inflicts 2% increased damage for each Minion you summon upon casting.
    • Now – Cut inflicts 2% increased damage for every Minion you summon upon casting and spawns a Corpse at its endpoint.

    Soulrift

    • New Feature: While draining from a Boss, Soulrift now also drains from up to two additional enemies simultaneously.
    • Corrupt 5: Each 30 souls consumed refills 1 of your Healing Potions with the lifeblood of your tortured victims.

    Supreme Soulrift

    • Maximum stacks increased from 30 to 100.
    • Damage bonus reduced from 1% to 0.5% per soul absorbed.
    • Maximum damage bonus increased from 30% to 75%.

    High Soulrift

    • Previous – Enemies with their souls extracted become Weak for 2 seconds. Vulnerable enemies affected by Soulrift have a 5% chance of having their souls removed and absorbed.
    • Now – Soulrift extracts double the souls from enemies and applies Weak to them for 3 seconds. After it concludes, all surrounding enemies are Feared and Slowed by 85% for five seconds.

    Blood Mist

    • Base damage increased from 2% to 35%.

    Inferior Blood Mist

    • Previous – Blood Mist leaves behind a Corpse every second.
    • Now – Blood Mist has transitioned into a Mobility Skill that provides a 30% Movement Speed increase, generating a Corpse every second and inflicting Weakness on enemies it passes by for five seconds.

    Unpleasant Blood Mist

    • Previous – You received a 10% Critical Strike Chance for 4 seconds after Blood Mist concludes.
    • Now – You obtain a 15% Critical Strike Chance and 10% Critical Strike Damage for five seconds following the end of Blood Mist.

    Bone Jail

    • Cooldown reduced from 18 to 15 seconds.

    Enhanced Bone Jail

    • Previous – Enemies caught in Bone Jail while it is active are made Weak for 8 seconds.
    • Now – Enemies within Bone Jail when it activates are rendered Weak and take 15% additional damage for 8 seconds.

    Unpleasant Bone Jail

    • Maximum Cooldown Reduction increased from 3 to 5 seconds.

    Inferior Bone Jail

    • Previous – If an enemy is ensnared by Bone Jail, you gain 25 Essence, plus an additional 5 for each enemy trapped.
    • Now – Casting Bone Jail grants 40 Essence. Capturing a Boss yields an extra 25 Essence.

    Army of the Dead

    • Damage increased from 90% to 120%.
    • New Feature: Volatile Skeleton explosions now Stun enemies for 2 seconds.
    • Now possesses the Summoning tag.
    • Corruption Level 5: The damage of Army of the Dead is boosted by 125% plus 40% of your Skeleton Mage and Golem Damage bonuses.

    Blood Wave

    • The Knockback effect on Blood Wave is now much more reliable and is expected to push enemies further along its path.
    • Corruption Level 5: Blood Wave’s damage is increased by 100% plus 30% of your Damage While Healthy and Damage While Fortified bonuses.

    Bone Storm

    • Corruption Level 5: Bone Storm’s damage is enhanced by 60% plus 30% of your Critical Strike Damage bonus.

    The upcoming Abilities Tree upgrades that directly inflict damage will now scale their damage with increased Skill Ranks of the corrupted skill.

    Reaper’s Pursuit

    • Previous – Hitting enemies with Darkness Abilities raises your Movement Speed by 5% for 3 seconds.

    Improved Damage

    • Previous – You inflict 4% more damage to Cursed enemies.
    • Now – You inflict 4% more damage to both Cursed and Feared enemies. These bonuses are stackable.

    Hellbent Commander

    • Previous – While observing at least 7 Minions, your Minions deal 10% more damage.
    • Now – While observing at least 7 Minions, gain 10% Summoning Damage.

    Coalesced Blood

    • Previous – While Healthy, your Blood Abilities deal 6% more damage.
    • Now – You inflict 6% more damage while Healthy.

    Spiked Armor

    • Previous – Grants 40 Thorns and 5% extra Armor.
    • Now – Grants 40/80/120 Thorns, 5/10/15% Armor, and a 10% Block Chance.

    Rathma’s Vigor

    • Now also provides 120% Overpower damage.

    Affliction

    • The explosion damage scaling based on your Shadow Damage Over Time bonus has been replaced with a Critical Strike Damage bonus.

    Legendary Aspects
