It has been the better part of a decade since Hyper Light Drifter was released, but the prequel, Hyper Light Breaker, finally launched into early access this week after almost two years of delays. Players on Steam have shared some critical feedback regarding the game’s bugs at this point, but developer Heart Machine is assuring that solutions are on the way.
In a message on social media, Heart Machine expressed remorse for the issues with the game and emphasized that they are “rapidly deploying performance enhancements.” In a separate announcement, Heart Machine encouraged players to share their dxdiag information on Discord if they experience difficulties on a machine that meets or exceeds the game’s system specifications.
🛑Sorry to anyone facing issues!🛑 We’re deploying performance upgrades ASAP.
We’re adding a vsync toggle, but for now, you can add this launch option in Steam to enable vsync “-ExecCmds=”r.vsync 1″”
We will also implement mouse sensitivity settings ASAP! pic.twitter.com/V2sTGHDPle— Hyper Light Breaker – Early Access NOW LIVE! (@HLBreaker) January 14, 2025
Initial reviews on Steam are predominantly negative, with numerous complaints regarding the lack of sensitivity settings, rigid movement and combat, the inability to rebind action keys, and a largely absent narrative compared to the original game. Some reviews do have positive comments about the combat in this roguelike game, but the general agreement is that Hyper Light Breaker lacks refinement even at this early stage of development. Heart Machine has responded to some of the negative reviews and indicated they will address the issues that have been raised.
Currently, Hyper Light Breaker is available at a discounted price of $27 on Steam, but that price may rise to $30 once the promotion concludes. Additionally, Fanatical is offering an even better deal for a Steam key at $23.39. For the moment, it’s too early to determine if Heart Machine’s updates will change the initial responses to this game.
