Despite blended experiences, the Dexter prequel sequence has been renewed for season 2
Dexter: Originated Sin, the prequel series to Showtime’s popular horror-drama, has been confirmed for a second season.
According to Deadline, a writers’ room for season 2 is set to begin soon, with filming scheduled to commence later this year or in early 2026.
Dexter: Originated Sin traces the journey of Dexter Morgan (Paddy Gibson) as he evolves from a student into a vigilante serial killer. When his murderous instincts become impossible to ignore, his adoptive father Harry (Christian Slater) assists him in directing his inner darkness. If you’ve had the chance to view the new Showtime series, Harry aids him in developing a ‘particular code’ to help him locate and eliminate murderers, traffickers, and various other forms of dangerous individuals without being apprehended. However, this poses a unique challenge for young Dexter as he embarks on a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department – which ultimately enhances his secret vigilante activities in the future.
The series has received generally mixed reviews from critics and audiences, holding a 68% critic score and a 76% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes (which isn’t too bad considering how prequels typically perform). The show premiered to 2.1 million viewers, setting a record for Showtime.
Joining the cast are Christian Slater, Christina Milian, Molly Brown, Jasper Lewis, Patrick Dempsey, and Sarah Michelle Gellar. Originated Sin was developed by Clyde Phillips, who was the showrunner for season 1 of the original series as well as the revival series Dexter: New Blood. And indeed, another Dexter offshoot is in the works.
