Undertale enthusiasts have partially adapted the 2015 indie classic to its rightful setting, the Game Boy Color from 1998.

Undertale possesses a wealth of classic Nintendo influences, drawing clear inspiration from titles such as Earthbound (and to a lesser degree Mario & Luigi, if I may say) while some of developer Toby Fox’s earliest endeavors consist of romhacks for Earthbound (the initial rendition of the legendary boss fight theme Megalovania surfaced in one). Although it might be a tad too intricate to have functioned on the SNES or any other classic Nintendo hardware, that hasn’t deterred fans from attempting.

As noted by Retro Dodo, the Undertale GB initiative reintroduces the beloved title to the 8-bit handheld, with the description stating it “recreates the original’s essential mechanics, pixel art aesthetic, and renowned soundtrack within the confines of retro technology.” Although it currently isn’t the complete game, developer Aki aspires to recreate the entirety of Undertale.

As illustrated in the preview on the game’s Itch.io page, alterations from the original are necessary. For instance, the enemy attack display where you maneuver your tiny heart to dodge assaults in a bullet hell-esque manner now occupies the full screen instead of being a window pop-up, and the game’s tunes have been revamped to align with the console’s soundchip. Even more remarkable is that this is not the first Toby Fox-related Game Boy Color adaptation, with fans having previously adapted Deltarune Chapter 1 earlier this year.

Toby Fox doesn’t anticipate Deltarune Chapter 5 “will be released in the first half of 2026,” but there’s some positive news: “we don’t have any external factors affecting the release date this time. We’ll launch it when it’s ready.”
